Firstly, as a new member, thanks for all the advice received so far. It has been most helpful!! My next issue is with a lot of splash-back against the transom progressively getting worse as speed increases. I've a 14.5 ft fibreglass clinker ski boat with a really 'shallow' hull (if that's the right word) and a 70hp o/b. The o/b has two angled wings or stabilisers (i'm not sure what they are called) above the prop. Could this be the problem or would it have more to do with the mounting of the outboard. I believe it is a long shaft. Thanks in advance and apologies if this is the wrong forum.

Ayuh,...

2 things jump Out at Me,...

1,.. Get Rid of the Whale Tail,....
And,..
2,.. The motor may be Too Deep,...

The plate that the Whale tail is mounted to should be about Dead Even with the Bottom of the Hull...

Re: Too much splash-back.

Dump the wings until you get the motor setup right then decide if you need the wings. The antivent plate(just above the prop)even with the bottom of the boat is considered a starting point.Usually can be raised higher.
Tell us where it is now.

Thanks Bondo and steelespike, seems i've got the motor a little low, about 2 inches. I'll try raising it and let you know. What is the whale tail for??

Re: Too much splash-back.

They are suposed to help plane easier and stay on plane at lower power.
They can cause problems as well as solve problems.Something like smart tabs
are a better solution after all is done to get the best performance first.

LOL, as ancient as it may be perhaps a helpful comment would be more appropriate. I'm sure forum moderators would agree...

Re: Too much splash-back.

i really meant no disrespect it's from the Cristmas Story you know?
Seriously the added fin on the cavitation plate can be disasterous, I tried one on my 16' 60hp outboard and it just about threw me out of the boat one day, I made a sharp turn and couldn't pull out of it! The fin came off that same day.
