I've used spinning rods and saltwater boat poles for years and have done rather well and feel very proficiant.

A buddy convinced me that I just had to have a baitcaster to improve my bass catch. So I ran down to the store and bought a Shimano Curado 200-B reel and a decent 7' medium heavy rod (I can't remember the rod brand, but it's one solid graphite blank)...

I haven't even put the line on the reel when I thought they sold me a left handers reel.. I called Shimano and the tech support guy tells me that you cast with the rod in your right hand, then switch hands and reel with the right hand. This can't be right is it? It seems WAY too awkward.

Can someone give me an anatomy of a cast and retrieve using a baitcaster?
Should the line guides be facing up or down on the retrieve?

Left handed reels always end with a 1, ie 201, 4001... The tech support guy told you the right thing. Personally I use left handed reels, dunno why cause I am not a left hander. But it is very convinient for me, since I dont have to switch hands when I cast. I dont know about everyone on this board but it took me for ever to learn how to somewhat master my baitcaster. Bait casting reels dont help you catch more fish either. Its jsut that you can really become deadly accurate with your casting. HMMM, guess I just contradicted myself on that one.
Good luck with your baitcaster.

Cast and reel both same hand is true of bait cast unless you follow Surge. Big advantage on casting reel is ratio and power to get the big ones out of brush before they can tangle you up.

Cast with your right hand. Then put the rod in your left. Guides up. Most guys grasp the reel with their hand so you can let the line pass through your fingers on the retrieve to help detect strikes.

You have to use your thumb to stop the spool when the lure hits the water, or the tree-branch :( , so no cheating & switching hands while the lure's in the air. Usually no problem except with a buzz bait or rattletrap over heavy grass, something you have to start retrieve right away. But it gets to feeling natural after awhile.

Then there's pitching & flipping, whole subjects unto themselves.

Lot of guys on my local fishing board are going to left-hand retrieve. I use spinning 1/2 the time & baitcasting the rest, and it don't make sense, but it just feels right to reel one with the one hand & the other with the other.

On those days when they're really biting, it's good to switch off & give the other forearm a rest. Avoid carpel tunnel sydrome that way.

Scott Edman, my guide on LOTW for umpteen years is right handed and always uses a "left handed" reel.

His explanation is the same as Water_surge. He doesn't have to switch hands at the moment MOBY ESOX clobbers his lure.

Only problem with this is that you dont hold the rod by the handle. (Called Cupping), you should hold the reel and rod with one hand and reel with the other. Thats the way the rods are balanced, if you hold the rod by the handle below the reel, its just not right. Kinda like holding a spinning reel on top and reeling backwards. Man that bugs me when I see that.

Re: Too stupid for baitcaster

Maybe I am on crack, but the way I have been using my 'caster (it is a right hand reel) is I hold the whole mess upside down, cupping the reel/rod from the side, and working the button with either my index or middle finger. The button has a selector that allows for the reel to lock into the reeling configuration as soon as I release it, so when I cast, I release the button just before the lure hits the water. I rarely birdnest. In the end I do it this way because I did not know I could have bought a reel that would allow me to reel with my left hand. I refuse to switch the rod from one hand to the other, that negates my whole reasoning for going to baitcaster from open face spin, which was to eliminate having to do extra things. Again, maybe I am on crack, but it works for me and I catch fish...

Just practice practice practice, one hand, tune the tension and start in the yard with a heavy weight, you will get it...

Yep, no doubt about it. If infact, you are doing as you say, you are also out of your mind. and you would have to reel backwards.

LOL :D You're right. I can't even imagine trying to operate a baitcaster like he just described.

Re: Too stupid for baitcaster

I guess I've been using spinning reels so long, I'll never change away from 'em. I've caught just about every possible fish with one. I suppose there are situations where something else would be better, but I doubt I'll ever change over.

Find a open area(no trees, power lines etc) and as kclost said just practice, practice, practice. Once you get the process down it becomes second nature and you don't even realize you are changing it from one hand to the other.
When casting heavy enough lures it is my first choice. When casting lighter lures I like to use a spincaster.

Re: Too stupid for baitcaster

I know it sounds bizarre, and I will eventualy get a 'caster that will allow me to reel with my left hand properly, but I have managed to get this to work, even if it is insane.

Roscoe, I am talking about the open faced spinners that you have to open the thingamajigger, hold the line with your index finger, and cast/release, followed by closing the thingamajigger and then reeling. I still like the open face spinner, but I am growing more and more fond of the baitcaster. I was casting off of my dock last night, and am now casting farther and more accurately than with the spinner, despite my twisted *******ized way of using my gear. :)

Re: Too stupid for baitcaster

JasonJ, you need to check out some new spinning reels. Like Shimano or Quantum. Even some of their cheaper $29 reels come withe a trigger to flip the bail and "grab" the line all with the index finger of the hand that holds the rod. Flip the rod, release your finger, bail closes with 1/2 turn of the handle.
With the Quantum, you never even tough the line.

And how do you guys cast live bait like a single hooked nightcrawler or a 2 inch minnow with a baitcaster?

Check em out:

Quantum

Shimano

Re: Too stupid for baitcaster

Hi guys,
Thanks so much for all the response!!!!
Since then I've traided the rod for a shorter rod, with a shorter butt end handle, thinner hand grip, and better quality.

NOW I get it!!! When you switch hands (which still seems very foreign to me) the left hand is holding the rod and the reel, and the trigger looking do thingy supports against the left pinky.

I was trying to hold it with my trigger finger against the do thingy.
I got a chance to practice this morning and found if I snap my wrist, like I would with a spinner, I got a birds nest. If I swing it like you would a tennis wracket or a one handed swing of a baseball bat, no birds nest.

Overhand gave me a birds nest every single time.

So far, I don't really see how this tool is more accurate than a spinner. But I'll keep practicing.
