engine is a merc 850 85hp 1973 i think<br /><br />engine has to be forced to start with the spray can power start stuff you spray into intake,<br /><br />any ideas on fault?<br /><br />throttle is crap, travels for ages and can only excellerate properly when full open and push down on it hard.<br />we mored up and lifted the engine and tried adjusting cable etc to the point that it just raises idle and no slack, my friend was also adjusting some screw to adj idle etc but makes hardly any difference?<br /><br />but for some reason now when boat running if you throttle to pull away she tries to rev but dies, or struggle for a bit then pics up slowley.<br /><br />i apreciate its us fiddling with it etc, but would love some pointers to send us in the right direction?

Sounds like you bought/inherited someone elses botched maintenance, Sportsman.<br /><br />Get a Repair Manual (Bottom of this page) and go through it. Then overhaul your carbs by the book.<br /><br />Finally, do the cable adjustments and the linkage and synchronization procedure, again by the book.<br /><br />That should clear up the obvious problems.<br /><br />Do not use any ether starting fluid that is not specifically for 2 stroke engines. If there is no lubricant in it it is deadly to outboards.<br /><br />Let us know if you need some pointers and how your results come out.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

trouble is these manuals will take ages to get to me in the uk, not as if i can pop down to my local store and get one off the shelf tomorrow

JB is right, it is very hard for an experienced mechanic to rebuild carbs without a manual, you might just have to bite the bullet on this one so to speak, and just wait until you can get a manual. As far as I know, this site will not ship out of country, but I think that Amazon.com will be able to get you one.<br /><br />The control box on your boat is probably worn out, and might need to be replaced. I would watch ebay and see if you can get one there for cheap.
