Took cylinder head COVERS off 1987 90HP. Already broke 2 bolts. Only broke 4 more.

Got 1 out with vise grips. Sprayed the others with SEA FOAM CREEP, still no go. Did not try the the trick the old man taught me, tighten a hair and then reverse. Any other ideas ?

What is that white powdery residue, kind of like baking powder ?

Since I already opened a can of worms ( this all started when I tried to install some cylinder head temp senders ), should I go further and replace the deflectors even thought the BRP guy told me to wait until I have an overheat issue. I already changed the waterpump and thermostats so as to start with a clean book(except for the deflectors). I have both sets of gaskets (head and cover) and the deflectors.

thanks

Heat,Heat,Heat, it is your best friend.
Is this a salt water engine?
I bet you will use anti-seize when you reassememble the heads woun't you.

Due to the age of the mtr I would also replace the water defelectors as long as you're there. If you're in a salt water area, yes plenty of heat. Also don't forget the cobalt drill bits and heli-coils. Been there-done that.

I want to emphasize I do have about a 1/4" on each bolt to grab onto. Hopefully no heli-coils will be needed.

1) HEAT - Propane torch or heat gun ? Do I have to worry about overheating especially around the head?

2) REPLACE DEFLECTORS - I have only taken off the head covers, not the cylinder heads. Just making sure you know that. I guess it is only a few more bolts. Hopefully I don't break any. It will make it easier to clean gasket surfaces. Again, I think I am prepared. I have 4 deflectors, 2 head gaskets and 2 cover gaskets.

3) ANTI-SEIZE - My book says to use BRP Gasket adhesive on bolts. So which should I use ? Can I use both?

4) BOLTS - They seem of a low grade. Should I upgrade to grade 8 ? Stainless? If so how about the headbolts? Maybe this is by design and I should not deviate.

Chesapeake Bay area.

So what was that white stuff again?

I have never tried this, but do you have access to a welder? I have seen multiple times the suggestion to weld a nut on the top of a broken bolt to twist it out. Not only do you get a nut to hang on to, the intense heat from welding can loosen it up.

The white material is generally aluminum oxide. You can slow down the corrosion by using and maintaining the anodes.

Most stainless steel screws are not the best choice for engine screws. The OE parts are best.

There is considerable opinion against the use of anti-sieze products because they introduced yet another metal into the mix. A little Triple Guard Grease will help to protect the metal and make future service easier.

Try using a 50-50 mixture of transmission fluid and acetone as a penetrating oil. Allegedly works better than any commercial stuff on the market. Let it soak in for a while, tap the bolt with a hammer (tap, not bang) then have a go at it.Nothing to lose at this point if it dosen't work.

If you heat the stub and then add penetrating oil the oil will be drawn in as the metal cools.

Heat - So how hot ? Propane torch I take it. Do I have to worry about warping anything ?

Triple Guard or BRP Gasket adhesive or both ???

It does not take lot of heat. Try to focus on the stub and let it heat and cool a few times.

Do what the book says....Gasket adhesive.

Go ahead and try all those magic potions. Won't hurt, but probably will benefit only the people that sell it.

Heat--Hot heat.

Heli-coils are great inventions.

DON'T use SS or Grade 8. You will deeply regret it if you do and ever have to drill them out again.
