i took the stringer out of my 1976 14ft tri hull. it was made out of a 2x8x12. that surprized me. i figured i was going to pull out mush being ply wood. there was only one stringer in the boat (down the center). now when i make a new one should i use the same thing 2x8x12 or use plywood doubled up, treated of course. after i bed the new one in how thick should i build up the fiber glass around it. more questions to come later.

thanks

When I did my old one i found the same thing. I have a friend that still works for a ship builder as a fiberglass man and he had me glue plywood together and put that in. he said that it would be stronger. we also put one thin 1/8 cloth on first then we went to a thicker 3/16 cloth. i do not remember what he called it,(some mat) he got it for me and it took me two week ends to finish.

yeah after i posted this i started to think dimensional lumber like this has a crown. (a slight bow to it) and you are always supposed to put the crown up when building. and im thinking that wouldnt be a very good choice for this. plywood is straight with no crown blah blah blah.. so plywood it is i will make it tomorrow and get it ready to put in the boat after i cut and grind the rest of the fiberglass stringer out. then fix a leak from the inside (did the out side last summer)

dont forget to glass that puppy in bud...and when you do....take your grinder and round off the edges ot the top of the laminated ply...it will make the glassing easyer..

when you bed the stringer...use some pl 9000 or peanut butter (i boats term)
to bed the stringer....that way you wont get a hard joint

it is a construction adheasive....very simmelar to 5200....except waaaay cheaper.......another called pl preimum.......both cure best when wet!...

just let them cure 24-48 hours before you glass over them.....

erik found a pl mortor/joint sealer......very very close to 5200.

these three are very underrated in boat building.
