Tomorow my friend and I are going to sea trial a boat he is considering buying. It will be is very first boat and as the resident boat expert of our group I have been solocitated to help protect his investment. Now, much in part to my years with you fine folks on iboats and my own experience I know a fair share about what to look for. However, since he's put his faith (an untimately his money) on me I dont want to miss something. So are there any checks beyond the basic stringer, transom, sole, drive, engine, that I should look for? I plan on bringing a mallet to check the transom and kiel, a lazer temp gauge to check the risers for even heat distrubition, and a compression gauge for well... self explainitory... am I missing anything? Thanks.

PS Here's a link to the boat in question: http://www.shorelineboatcenter.com/...39148X9K16K2011J8I51I15JPMQ6506R0&veh=2129103

What you are bringing sounds fine. Just make sure the OWNER brings a full tool kit!

Thanks for the reply. I kinda thought I had a good handle on this (just needed a lil reassurance from a fellow boataholic, lol). Unfortunately the "owner" is a dealer so Im thinking the only tool kit he's gonna bring contains a silver tongue burried in a sack of bull****, lol.

One question, if you were selling your boat, would you let someone you didn't know take tools to your boat to see if they wanted to buy it. Keep in mind, you have no idea if the guys knows what he is doing or not. What if he cross threads a spark plug when he puts it back in, but you don't find out till he's gone.

A valid point Don. Perhaps the compression tester is a bit too intimate for a boat I dont own. Maybe just stick to the non invasive lazer temp gauge. I dont wanna over step my bounds but in the same respect Im not gonna take everything at face value. To clarify though, my friend would not be doing any of the tests/inspection, I would.... so maybe a bit of caution is in order. I dont need to own a second boat, lol. Any advice though?

Ahh but the ultimate test is if the seller will let you take it to a Certified Marine Mechanic for a complete check. I'm not sayin you're not capable by any means but if the seller balks then tell your buddy to walk. At the same time you can ease that load you're carrying on your sholders.

if you have access to a bore scope it can be very handy for looking in places that you can't otherwise see

UPDATE: After an impressive sea trial this morning my friend has decided to join the boating community. I expect to see him posting here on iboats in the near future.
