Anyone know a cheap place to buy mercruiser tools? I need the tool to remove the bearing carrier retainer part #C-91-61069. Or any ideas how to easily remove this retainer?
BTW the boat I posted about last week, well against all advice I got it today. Outdrive is froze up. Upper half of the drive looks good, all shiney and very clean. Lower unit looks good from the top. They drained the oil before they put it into storage 3 years ago, so some surface rust may have formed on the lower unit. I want to open the lower and see what the bearings look like, and replace what is needed.
The engine is turning free and looks great. The tilt pump is not running, but I haven't been that far into it yet.
Any ideas on the above problems would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: tools?

The special tool you need to take the drive apart is only part of the process. The tools needed to put it back together and get it shimmed properly are a lot more costly that the C-91-61069 is. And if you don't get the proper gear pattern by using the special tools, you are spending a lot of money for part for no reason. Mostly because you can not put them back together correcly without the special tools.
Click here for one place with some decent prices for special tools.

Re: tools?

The tool is quite useless for removing the retainer. You'll need it for installation, you can fabricate it as you'll likely have to buy a new retainer ring, use that to fabricate the tool. The tool only holds at 4 positions, not all of them, so it isn't too complex.

The ring usually well corroded into place. Unless it has been removed recently, you don't stand a chance. My retainer was installed last year, no go with my weight (130lbs), a 4 ft bar, heat, WD40, Liquid Wrench, Plus Gas.

If, its stuck, you'll have to resort to drilling around the perimeter and breaking it off. Take care not to damage the threads and don't go past the stainless steel locking tab washer.

Yes, you'll need some special tools. The pinion nut tool can be substituted with a thinned down 7/8 inch ring spanner. Its still a pain to get the nut into position.

If I understand correctly from yr previous post, you are into the seals only, in that case you only need the tool for the retainer ring.

Re: tools?

Thanks for the help. I know about all of the other tools needed too. I plan on getting into it with this paycheck, then after that buying things slowly paycheck to paycheck. It also epends on what I find inside. If it is in good shape yet, I plan on just replacing bearings and seals. if it is anything beyond that I am going to find a different lower gearcase. For now it is just a hobby I am playing with to learn how it all works.

Re: tools?

One tip on the forward gear tapered and roller bearings.

Since everything was out, I thought might as well change all the bearings. Not able to figure out the removal, brought it to a mechanic. As it was in pretty good shape, he advised aginst trying saying that the process is prone to damaging the gear.

Unclear whether he was referring to the tapered bearing or the roller needle bearing. But something to ponder before trying that bit.

Re: tools?

Thanks Qystan, I will keep that in mind. Actually I found an outdrive (freebie) and have it on. As soon as I get my electrical (topic in another post) problem fixed I will take it for a test run. The drive looks great, will see what it does under high speed under a load. Also have a friend lined up to follow me on the maiden voyage to tow me home if needed.
