i just bought a 1997 sea nymph fm146, with a johnson 30 on it, just replaced the prop with the correct pitch, with just me and a dog in the boat i can do 24 mph, with two people i can do 23, with an evenly distrubuted load of 3 ppl cant barely plane out and only hit 13mph on the gps? there is a hydrofoil on the motor, but shouldnt it be a little faster than that? and the max weight is not being exceeded.....any help or sugguestions would be great

Try without the whale tail. It's slowing you down. For larger loads you might need to swap to a lower pitch prop.

That is the right top end speed for that boat. I had a very similar Alumacraft that had an almost identical motor and got about the same speed. I agree- get rid of the whale tail and try it again. It creates too much drag. Willy gives perfect advice.

He is also correct in saying that you might have to re-prop if your load dramatically changes (adding a couple more people than normal). Your dealer will help you with a prop to drop a pitch for those times where you need to get the RPM's up for those heavy loads....

I am wondering if that is the for sure the right degree prop? My dad has close to the same boat and it gets 6 MPH faster. BUT he doesn't have the whale tail either. Bill

you might try adjusting the trim pin out a little, with they whale tail it's picking up the stern, causing the bow to plow, move the pin out some and see if it picks up the bow so it can get on plane. i hate whale tails.

thanx guys, took off the tail and gained 2mph.....so poses one more question, feels like after half throttle it is slipping, i have to feather it to get up to top end or just do it right out of the hole
