I recently did a rebuild on the two carbs on my motor as well as replace fuel pump. The motor runs great. When I first start out in the morning though, I tend not to have top speed. After I run the boat for awhile and back off the throttle, it will usually runs great with a good top speed. Do some Mercs act this way? is this common? If not, what might it be?

I don't think yours can do this, but if you are opening the throttle butterflies too far (beyond 180 degrees) it would act like that, but all the time. Air temp can have a lot to do with how a motor runs. That should run better when it's cool. A bad stator would do that and a bad switchbox could do that, but you wouldn't get good top speed. I'm shooting blanks.

I can answer two of the questions, though. At least one Mercury acts that way and I don't think it's common. Hey, two out of three ain't bad.

rverano, Your motor may not run properly until it is completely warmed up. I had a Merc that would start up (cold start)accelerate well, and then hesitate at full throttle for a few seconds and then go back to running great for the balance of the day. Never did figure it out!

My brother's 90 (3 cyl) does that too.
