Top Mount Kit?

I picked up a box of misc 9.9 and 15hp parts at a flea market last weekend, in it is a box marked OMC Top Mount Kit.
The kit consists of a red lever, another small bracket with a pulley, and some bolts.
The part number is rubbed away. Most of the stuff was all from the late 70's.

Does anyone know what this is for or how it worked?

I thought at first it may have been a remote control kit for a tiller motor but none of the parts look like they are meant to attach control cables too. There's a small pulley too but no cable or anything to use it with?

I'm not positive, but sounds like it could be a steering connector

Re: Top Mount Kit?

I dont know about the red lever but at least some of the other stuff ( incl the little pulley wheel) are designed so that the starter cord can be pulled upwards, for example when the motor is fitted on a bracket on the transom of a sailing yacht.

I think the red lever may be an extension to the gear lever to bring that into reach

Go to the BRP parts catalog http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=83eb842d30d972a58d338f1d3e344892&catalog_id=0&siteid=1

From the drop down list on the LH side select OB accessories and then explore what is listed as "top mount control kit" under "remote controls" for the years you think your lot has come from.

Quite a few different kits listed for different size engines and different years.

Yep right about the lever!

My Yachtwin has somewhat simpler arrangement for the cord , but the lever would be useful.. now i know what it looks like I'll have to make something

The long handle extends the shift lever. The pully allows you to pull the starter rope from above.

Makes sense to me, I never thought about a sailboat or kicker motor application that way.
Every boat I've had with a kicker had electric start and it's own remote controls.
