Is there a way to calculate what the anticipated Top Speed of what a boat should be? Last month I ordered a 2004 FourWinns 194 Funship with the VP- 270HP-SX @ 3600 lbs dry weight. The specs say it tops out @ 37.1 MPH, for that eng. & drive pkg,( hope this was typo).I have also reviewed several heaver boats with the same drive and Eng. pkg that are showing much better top end speeds 45-49MPH. Does any one out there have a similar boat & drive pkg that could give s better idea of what might be expected?

Thanks / Meadview

Re: TOP SPEED CALCULATIONS for VP-270HP SX

Maybe the formula for estimating WOT for an ideally rigged and propped outboard boat would help, Meadview.

MPH=(square root of HP/weight)X 200

For your boat, 270HP/4000lb = .0675,
square root = .2598
times 200 = 51.96MPH

The 4000lb is my estimate of "on the water, fueled and loaded".

The 200 is a "bottom factor", If fits your boat. If your boat is deep vee, it should be reduced to 175, in which case the MPH would come out as 45.47MPH.

Good luck. :)

Calculations are interesting---on-water tests are the only way to tell. Talk to someone who owns last year's model and/or go to the boating magazines and find one that's tested your model.

Deck boats are slower by design.

Did you drive a boat like this before you ordered one?

Hull factor for a deckboat should be 150. You didn't specify a deckboat.

Calculations to estimate are just that: estimates.

For your deckboat the calculated estimate is 38.97, IFF it weighs 4,000lb on the water and IFF it is ideally rigged, propped and trimmed.

JB,

Thanks for the info......... (Good Stuff)

DDBoater,
I did not get a chance to drive one before buying (no one had one available) Top Speed was not a big concern, just thought the numbers seemed kinda low for the power plant. I purchased off the reputation of Four Winns.

That formula is pretty close. My Regal probably weighs close to 2800lbs fully loaded and with my fat 'ol butt in it, and has a 190hp 4.3 in it. The formule says 44mph and I can get 41-42 out of it on glass smooth water. :)

I have the same boat with a 220ho 5.0 and an sx drive. With a light load and a SS 19 prop, I get 48-49mph at 4800rpm. Here is a spec sheet from Four Winns about the 194. It shows the perfromance of most of the drive packages available for that boat. I think it has a typo on the SX prop pitch, as they are all listed as 21's, but mine was delivered with a 19 as was the one I test drove.

194 FUNSHIP

Specifications US METRIC
LOA: 21’3” 6.40 m
Storage Length: 21’11 6.68 m
Beam: 8'6" 2.59 m
Keel to W/S Shelf: 4’9” 1.45 m
Total Height: 5'11" 1.80 m
Total Height on Trailer: 7'4" 2.24 m
Transom Angle: 13˚ 13˚
Deadrise: 17˚ 17˚
Bridge Clearance: 4'9" 1.45 m
Cockpit Height (stern): 29" 74 cm
Cockpit Height (helm): 35" 89 cm
Freeboard (min.): 32" 81 cm
Draft (drive down): 31" 79 cm
Draft (drive up): 14" 36 cm
Fuel: 50 gal. 189 l
Persons Capacity: 11 11
Maximum Capacity: 1700 lbs 771 kg

Power Ratings & Weights
Engine Propshaft Power Boat & Engine Weights
Type HP KW Lbs KG

MC4.3L/A 190 142 3700 1680
VP 4.3GL/SX 190 142 3750 1700
MC4.3MPI/A 220 164 3730 1690
VP 4.3GXi/SX 225 169 3780 1710
VP 4.3GXi/DP 225 169 3800 1720
MC5.0L/A 220 164 3800 1720
VP 5.0GL/SX 220 164 3850 1750
MC5.0MPI/A 260 194 3810 1730
MC5.0MPI/B1 260 194 3900 1770
VP5.0GXi/SX 270 201 3860 1750
VP5.0GXi/DP 270 201 3880 1760

Recommended Engine(s)/Equipment Avg. Re: TOP SPEED CALCULATIONS for VP-270HP SX

Mead---don't get me wrong---Four Winns is a fine vessel. Once you get to the horsepower rating you are looking at, the extra speed comes from hull design. I am running the standard 250 hp small block and I get 62.3 mph (GPS) with just me and fuel and ideal conditions.

Your concern will be hole shot on that deck boat design, especially if you are going to run with several people in the boat and try to pull skiiers, tubers, etc.

With my fixed blade, 21 pitch, original equipment Mercury SS prop, my kids (in their 20s, adults by age calculation) and their friends had some trouble pulling tubes (8 in the boat, two or three on tubes).

The Torque-Shift prop took care of the hole shot (you really do have to sit down when you hit it, no matter how many are in the boat or they will fall out), but I lost 2 mph on the top end.

Still tweaking.

Re: TOP SPEED CALCULATIONS for VP-270HP SX

BVH,
You are the only other person I know of that has one... Your engine is the 220HP, and you are running 48-49 w/light load. Are you are pleased with the performance?, Any thing I should look for when accepting it from the dealer?

I guess I'll wait and see what the performance "actually" is before I bug you guys with any more questions.. (I should have it in the water by next week if the delivery sked holds)

Thanks Again,

Meadview
