I have a 1994 Stratos 284FS with a Johnson 225 HP outboard engine. Other than taking the boat out how can I find out what the top speed would be?

If you find someone that knows the real answer to that...ask him the lottery numbers for next week and the and when the boating restrictions will be lifted here in the U.K. haha.
joking aside, probably not an easy one and best just take her out a spin with a gps.
best of luck !

You need to water test what you're asking, there's no smartpnone application to discover that on-line LOL!!

I did a quick search on the web and found a few places that report the boat with a 150hp will do just short of 60 mph. I personally don't believe them but you have 75 more hp so maybe with your set up I'm going to guess 60mph... now go out and pin that boat and report what your actual speed is. You have to use a GPS, the speedo in a boat is more of a guess that anything else...

I was going to put my boat in the water this weekend but I had to brush the snow off the covers and I don't think my defrost is working... someone told me it was mid May, don't believe that ether...

oh... and welcome board... :welcome:

keep in mind there are sooooo many factors in determining the speed of your boat, prop, water, temperature, condition of the hull (this is a big factor), weight of people in boat, gear in the boat, how much gas you have in the tank.... you can have two identical boats and one will be faster. Someone correct me but horse power rating of a boat is best educated guess. I'm thinking no two motors will have the same amount of power and no two hulls will be exactly the same.

industry standard on hp is
+/- 10% when new. so 203 hp to 245 hp, when new.

but now its 26 years old and condition unknown.
prop unknown
setup unknown

If its set up for water sports(tubing/sking) maybe upper 50"s...if set up for fishing(motor will be higher) around 60mph. That model the center of gravity is far forward and windshield act as elevators and holds bow down..Too much wetted surface to go fast. Got one I service at Boy Scout camp with Xr6..runs right at 50 mphWOT at full trim

50 MPH on the water, at least in my books is pretty quick. I think most boats are lower 40s. His boat looks fast and with a 225 I bet it will be...

Lots of ways. You can talk to someone that owns a boat just like it. You can contact the manufacturer for specs. You can look for performance data reported by boat test companies, or you can google a utube video.

However, I don't think boattest.com goes back that far, Stratos is out of business and whether the parent company has data is unknown.

The last 3 boats I bought new had published performance data available.

A big however, though, is that a casual search indicated that the max power for that boat is 150 HP, thus it might just be advisable to not try to use all those extra ponies. See what your insurance broker says.

it will do 70mph on the trailer behind your truck on the freeway

beyond that, its an over-powered 27 year old fiberglass boat with un-known hull integrity

If the boat is 75 hp over max, you may want to have a close look at the transom for stress cracks. I am normally very up beat about new to you boats but... that is a lot of extra horse power the engineers did not account for.

Let us know how it works out for you.
