For the fist time that I know of, most of the schools in this region (Mid-SOuth) were let out today at 11 AM because of severe storm warnings. Over a dozen counties. One school's kids were boarding the buses when the tornado sirens were going off and it was hailing!. Everybody I talked to thought this plan was nuts! The official explanation was that they did not want to be responsible if a tornado hit the schools and hurt or killed children on their watch. Gee thanks. Duck and cover... your own buttz! My house is two axles shy of a mobile home so my kids are better off in a concrete school for sure. THIS one's gonna be brought up in the next school board meeting!

Anybody else's school ever do this?

spots

Ours stayed in session. Good thing too as we had multiple hits around. one witness reported seeing one tornado jump a school that still had 300 kids. Destroyed houses on both sides, but didn't touch the school.

Around here the schools are the designated shelters for emergency's such as severe weather.

I know this sounds nuts, but I agree with the school policy.
If deadly tornadoes are in the neighborhood it is better to spread the kids over a large area in order to decrease the chance for a mass disaster.
Unless your schools are up to specs on hurricane strength winds it is the right thing to do.

-But send them home DURING the storm? And what if they lived in one of those houses next to that school in JasonB's town? NOt to mention, we have severe weather alerts all of the time around here... are they going to go home evertime it rains?

If they are that worried about it, reinforce a few areas of the schools (main hallway for example) and make them "saferooms" or something. Most of the ones in this town have such areas already.

spots

yes here also  I was substituting a class the alarms went off it was about ten minuets later school was let out. Saw a white funnel luckly to the northeast. one bus driver was out on route with kids somewhere in Oklahoma with a bus load full of kids.I do think it is a good school board meeting to discuss. and now is storm season here. Now I get off work early if it is stormy out I go get them.
serenity
