I am putting the lower unit on my 92 40hp johnson back together tonight and have a question. I assume i should use some lock tight on the nut on the end of the drive shaft. I do not have the "special tool" for the drive shaft nut so i am just using a thin wall open end wrench. worked fine to remove it.. but my question is, is there a torque spec that i have to tighten this too or if i use locktite and get it good and tight will it be ok?

chad

What wrench did you use to get the pinion nut off besides your thin wall wrench. The torgue is 65#, but I don't know how much that is with a pair of vice-grips.

Re: Torque spec question

That nut should be replaced once removed. Certainly Loc-Tite would be good insurance. If that nut comes loose, you are looking at over $400.00 in gears alone. A pipe wrench has no place in the replacement of these kind of parts. Use the proper socket, and torque wrench.
