I need to work on my timing advance. I know what to do and why I need to do it, but doing a lot of research on what advance timing is and how far it should be set has me a little confused.

I know if it starts predetonation and pings you have gone to far, so that is a dirty, kind of time consuming way to get it right.

Here is an exerpt form a site explaining this.
"For example, part-throttle total timing would look something like this: 10 degrees initial + 10 degrees vacuum + 20 degrees mechanical = 40 degrees of total timing."

I know boats dont have vaccum advance, so when someon eis telling you what your advance should be are they telling you the number on top of the initial timing, or are they taking that into account?

I have a 73 307 V8, research for auto shows it can accept advance up to 40 degrees, and more under optimal conditions. That number is obviously taking into account the initial timing. What should I bee looking at for total advance at say 3000RPM from 0 degrees?

Much more than 32*s,+ You'll be Building a Motor......

Total Timing is the Total....... Initial,+ the Advance,.... Whether Vacuum, Mechanical, Or Electronic...............

Generally in a small block Chevy total advancce should be reached between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Like Bondo said 32 degrees for continous full throttle. If you are only at full throttle for a few seconds 34 to 36 is do able. Vortec engines need less advance than the older small blocks.

You really should get someone to run the distributor on a distributor machine. That way you will know what your advance curve looks like . Barring that you use an adv timing light to get an idea what is going on with the adv curve. Check the timing at idle and then 1500, 2000, 2500, and every 500 rpm until the adv quits advancing. The dist machine is better because I have seen distributors that are still advancing at 5500+ rpm.

When I was doing recurves I would set up a boat dist for 10 degrees at idle and a smooth progression from 1500 to about 3500 depending on the weight, motor size, etc. 30 to 32 total sounds good. The 307 has a small bore and doesn't need a lot of lead.
