Tower of power shifting issues

Just a quick rundown. I have a 140hp tower of power that was in running condition a few years ago. When I moved I went out to run it and run the carbs dry. At the time I could put it in reverse, but could not get out of hit. It was very difficult the move the shifter and it wouldn't budge beyond reverse. It's been in storage like that for a year and a half and I finally brought it home. The issue is still there. I read up a bit thinking it could be the mercontroller or cables. Independently these all work fine.

I now have the cable disconnected and can move the linkage along the rail, not sure the name of this but it goes to an arm just below the bottom carb. I can manually push this about a third of the way back before I hit resistance. It's not a metal on metal feeling, more like things unseen I'm fighting or something is not aligning.

I tried to turn the prop and fly wheel manually and see if I can get it to drop in a gear. With quite a bit of force I can find a neutral at the very far end of the rail, shift linkage neatly all the way aft. Prop spins both directions with no racheting. I let off pressure and I'm back in gear.

Now the question, should I be able to "click" into a gear and find neutral? As in find it, let off pressure and have it stay in? Or are the no detents? Push it in gear and it's just held in place by the controller? Which would explain why it goes in and out of gear depending on where I hold it.

I haven't had this motor apart and I see a lot of issues related to these symptoms seem to come up when the lower is removed. This just started doing it out of the blue.

Any suggestions? Anything else I should check?

Is this something that just spontaneously goes out of adjustment sometimes? I've never had the lower unit off before. I guess this will be the first time. Is there anything that could be worn out that I need to look at that might cause this to be a more frequent issue?

The clutch dog is spring loaded and does not want to stay in reverse !----------Are you turning the prop when trying to shift to reverse , yes or no ?

Well merc850 called it. Dropped the lower, put everything in neutral and put it back together. I can now go into fed and neutral smooth again.

Racerone- I was turning the prop when I tried to shift, didn't seem to help. Followed mercs instructions, no issues. Went a lot smoother then I was anticipating.

I take my LU off every winter and before I launch in the spring I grease the driveshaft/shiftshaft splines and re-install using my instructions, if the shift cam is OK the gear will stay in neutral. Glad it went so easily for you - put some grease on the slider rail to make it move smoothly.
