tower of power **** stream question

im new to the world of outboards so this could be an easy answer for you gurus. Ive got a 78 140 tower of power. i started it up the other day with muffs and the garden hose to get it running and make sure it ran ok before i take it out for the first time. i got a good flowing **** stream right off the bat, than i noticed it slowing down to a dribble, than to nothing. I shut it down right there. now the question, is this what is supposed to happen? Ive read on the board some OB have thermostats, some do not. Does mine? or did i just witness the pump take a dump? This all happened over a period of 5-10 minutes, idle speed, not throttle, in neutral. i hope im just a newbie and you all get a good laugh out of this, and there is nothing wrong at all. thanks for any advice though.

Take a piece of weed-eater string and push it up into the opening. May not be your problem but I've seen it 3 times in the last year, once while on the lake. Mud Daubers (wasp-like insects) love to find little openings like that and fill it with garbage. It will stop up the hose in a heartbeat even though it ran fine for a few minutes. Just a thought...

Also, if I'm not mistaken, when using the "muffs", you are forcing the water pump to work even if its bad. It's like sticking a water hose in your mouth...the water is going to have to come out somewhere, and seeing that stream of water from the motor isn't telling you the "whole" story. When using a barrel or tank of water and placing the outboard in it, its sucking water in instead of having it forced in (like the hose & muffs).

Those telltales clog up pretty easy. You can remove the wrap cowl and pull the telltale hose off the plastic elbow on the head. You should see a strong water flow on the muffs or in the lake. If not, the waterpump needs rebuilding.

You do not have a thermostat on that motor.
