Re: Towing my boat with a lanwmower...

I added a tow hitch to my '96 Sears Garden Tractor last summer (the grey & black square hooded model) . That's a big boy with 18 hp twin, 21" drive wheels, hi-lo range 3 speed trans. The problem I ran into was finding a spot high enough to mount the tow hitch. A piece of 2" x 1/8" x 18" steel was bent into a V shape with feet at the top of the V. This mounted horizontally to the back of the frame and the tow ball mounted on it. The location for the utility trialer mount was too low to use and the trailer jack would not lower enough to use it.

In my earlier post the little Rugg mower was used when the boat was on the old trailer with no jack, so it was just a matter of lifting the tongue 12" to connect. BTW the Rugg is only 4 hp but in 1st gear pulled the 1200 gvw trailer just fine. Scary but it worked. I feel much better towing the boat around the back yard on a machine that I can't pick up and put on my lap.

Just remember to check tire pressure and trans/axle lube levels first. With the Sears tractor, I can tow it in 1st just off idle and it seems happy even on the inclines. Of course you would loose a race to a snail at those speeds....

I was also thinking about getting a lawn tracker to move my boat until I took what I call the $100 gamble--I installed a front mount hitch on my truck. I must say that it works great. I can position my boat (20', 2500#) on a dime. The best part is I don't have yet another motor to maintain.

OMC that thing looks good. I'm sure a guy could home make one with a used motor for a lot less.

With the relatively low tongue weight to boat weight I think you have braking on hill concerns and off pavement traction problems. On good flat ground I bet it works great. IMHO

a used 4 wheeler, the atv style, not the truck. would be a m uch better option.

and they are also a lot funner to ride than a lawn mower:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I second the front hitch, it makes it so easy to get the boat in my narrow driveway, you have to try it to believe it. And if I need to move the boat around, I can get it within inches of where I want it on the first try. Front hitch cost about $120 or so, bolted up to the Jeep with 6 bolts and makes a nice strong recovery point if you are into off roading too.

Lou C or anyone else:

Where did you get the front hitch? I would like to put one on my truck but am a little concerned about how it looks as I use my truck/SUV for business.

Check out etrailer.com, they seem to have decent prices. You should be able to get one custom sized for your vehicle along with accessories, like a license plate mount that slides into and hides the receiver.

Gads, I sound like a commercial.

I use a 14 HP Toro to move my boat (3000#), harley trailer with 2 bikes on board all the time. I replaced the jack tire with an air filled one for stability and only move stuff around on a paved driveway.
Stalker

Re: Towing my boat with a lanwmower...

I have used my Honda 450 ESI 4-wheeler, my 1641 Cub Cadet, and my 1990 Ezgo gas powered golf cart to move my 19' CC all over the place, including the boat ramp where I live. I find that for just moving around or getting in a tight place I like the golf cart. If it requires more punch I will opt for the Honda or Cub Cadet. I did make an extension for the Cub Cadet that raises the ball by about 6". The hydro driveshaft trans. makes it real nice to stop on a dime, and with all the tongue weight wheel slippage is almost non-exsistent. I guess you just do what suits your needs and wallett.

>>>>> First Post <<<<< Buddy

I used a 14 hp Murry that I have used to pull every thing in my yard except for my boat. I how have a 27 hp Craftsman and have pulled my boat, Jeep and truck around in my yard.
