A few years back we had a 1979 3500 Chevy pickup, we used it for a work truck, plowing, towing ect....

The thing was all rusted and the seat was falling threw the floor boards. So, we had it cut in half. The cab was junked. But we had someone weld a tung to the bed so we could use it as a trailer, we call it our "pickup truck trailer."

On the bumper of the trailer we’ve got a ball that we used for towing[back when it was a truck]. Could we take our new truck, {2002 Dodge 2500} and pull the pickup truck trailer with my 11 foot Boston Whaler attached to that?

I'm almost sure that it would work, but what would a cop think about the whole thing?

I'm asking this because I just finished loading the the truck/boat up for our trip to Maine. Within the next year we will be going to FL and NJ by car, and it would be nice to have the extra space.

Thanks for any replys that you may have,
Ryan.

Re: Towing queston.

The laws on this differ by state. Many now require that you are certified to run double trailers, which requires a comercial license.

Most states thats gonna be illegal. Most will allow a double pull if the middle trailer is a fifth wheel or gooseneck.

Now back when I had my 27' travel trailer, I also had a tow hitch welded to the frame of it and pulled my bass boat with me when I would go camping, but I had good brakes on the travel trailer and kept them in good working order.

Also seen one time a guy come in to the campground from Florida set up that way.

RyanT... If you pick up a GOOD rand Mcnally map they usually list each states towing requirments in the front. You could check there but I think what you will find is that most of the easterrn states no longer allow it, it is more common out west. I believe Minnesota is one that allows it if first trailer is fifthwheel or goosneck.

reread the question ... I understand now, lol

the biggest problem is going to be backing up, youll have to be aware of the fact that you have to be able to pull forward

I used to tow tractor trailers, and its almost easy, you turn the way you want to turn the rear unit

but that middle pivot can jack on you in a heartbeat, and THAT is a PAIN IN THE AZZ

if is legal, I would get some sort of stabilizer

they dont call doubles "wiggle wagons" fer nothin!

Ryan,
I assume you are talking about a homemade pick-up box trailer. Along with an 11' boat - piece of cake, my friend. Legal issues, possibly - you folks out east have laws stacked upon laws; but that's nothing here in SD to see people pulling a camper with a boat hooked to it. According to state law here - any combination on a public roadway that exceeds a total length of 70', a special permit must be purchased.

I haul my 18' Lund, behind my 24' camper(hitch-mount, not 5th wheel), behind my '02 Super-Duty, and the overlall length is 67'. In 50 or more outings and over 40,000 miles with this set-up, all through SD, ND, Mn, Wi, Ia, Ne, Co, and Wy, I've never been stopped, and I've always been "waved through" weigh-stations. It's so easy to pull you almost forget that you're pulling anything at all. The set-up you're talking about would barely be over 50' total length.

When I stop anywhere, I just make sure they have "truck parking" and I pull my rig right in there next to the biggies. When I get to where I'm going, I unhook the boat first, drop the camper where I'll be "setting up", rehook the boat to the pick-up, and put her in the water... quite simple, actually.

Oh Neumanns,
Just noticed your location: north-central...anywhere near Alexandria? I just spent 10 days near there in early June, as I've done every summer for 30+ years.
