I am looking at purchasing a 2010 tahoe q7i (20.5 feet). The dealer says package weight is about 4,000#. I have a 2014 jeep grand Cherokee, which is rated to tow 6,200. It has an eight speed transmission with an upgraded cooler. The jeep dealership said I should be fine. Does anyone have experience towing with a similar setup?

Thanks

Welcome to iBoats . . .

"package weight" includes trailer, I assume ? Add some fuel and gear and maybe you are at 5K lbs. so, you have got 1,000 lbs of 'headroom' in the spec's. Does not sound like anything to worry about.

FWIW - I towed a 24 foot boat (4750 lbs + 1200 trailer = 5950 lbs + fuel, so call it 6500 lbs) with a Ford Explorer rated to tow 7000 lbs.

I tow the Stingray in my sig with a 2011 Pathfinder. The package weight of my boat is ~4500 lbs and my Pathfinder is rated to tow 6000 lbs. I have no problems and have towed it on 250 mile round trips at highway speeds. I think you will be just fine.

Safe towing is 1% vehicle, 99% driver. How much towing experience do you have? Any jeep will be very sensitive to a lack of tongue weight, and it will put you in the ditch in a hurry at 75 mph. Anyway, vehicle is fine. If you don't have a lot of experience, drive EXTREMELY cautiously the first season, and practice backing up in an empty parking lot.

Dan, you don't have a signature.

I also tow a 23' boat with a mid size SUV. I have fully functioning trailer brakes and upgraded brakes on my truck.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the input.

I do not have much experience towing as this will be our first boat, but I will definitely be taking it slow and practicing at first.

If you don't know how to back her up then Get some traffic comes go to an empty parking lot and learn how to back her up. It will be 10 times more stressful at the ramp with people watching you.

+1, also you can just aim for an empty parking spot

Also it's better to do your first launch in the middle of the week when there aren't people around. I was teaching a guy once and there was no one around so we just keep launching and loading, he got 10 Saturday's worth of experience in less than an hour.

The Saturday of Memorial day weekend at 11am is not a great time to be learning.
