10 Questions With tpenfield
My name is Ted P
Where Are you from?
I live in the Boston, MA area and boat on Cape Cod
How long have you been boating?
About 50 years (yea, I'm old). I got my first boat when I was about 10 years old. Did mostly sailboats and small outboard boats when I was young, then got into larger sailboats about 20 years ago and finally powerboats in the past 15 years.
Just about all of my boating has been in salt water, as I have always lived near the ocean.
Have you worked any boating related jobs? (If yes, tell us more)
No jobs in the boating industry, but maybe someday . . .
How many boats have you owned and who manufactured them?
My first boat as a kid was a 'Sport Yak'. More recently I owned an older Sunfish (then made by Alcort), a Catalina 22 (sailboat) made by Catalina yachts, a Formula 242SS and now a Formula 330 SS, both made by Formula/Thunderbird.
What boat do you currently own?
I still own the Sunfish and have the Formula 330SS with twin 7.4 MPI Mercruiser engines as my primary boat. I have also made my own boat from scratch . . . an 8'6" Pram dinghy that uses my Mercury 7.5 HP outboard.
Do you prefer a particular motor manufacturer?
Yes, Mercury & Mercuiser.
What is your favorite boating activity?
Mostly day cruising . . . going to some local spots and just hanging out on the boat, going swimming off the stern, and doing a little bit of water sports - tubing for the most part.
Does boat maintenance count as an activity? I do a lot of that too. I have done all of my own maintenance and repairs on all of my boats, (each one bringing me deeper in to the abyss).
Where is your favorite boating destination?
Areas around Buzzards Bay, Martha's Vinyard and Cape Cod. I have a few favorite hangout's , and also try some new places to explore.
