Tractor paint HELP!
so have been prepping my 1974 Duo Vagabond for reassembly after about a year of restoration. Transom, stringers, decking etc.
had some holes and cracking around the keyhole which has all been fixed, sanded, faired and re sanded.
needed to make the outside of the transom “pretty “ and decided to go “tractor paint “
- roll on roll method -
applied primer last week and re sanded all was good.
last night I applied my colour coat (white) and made a huge mess of it, applied to thick I think and likely rolled it out to long. Also I did NOT thin the paint, only 2cups paint and 1oz hardener.
lumpy, bumpy, horrible looking.
I figured I would have to sand it all down smooth again but would at least have a solid undercoat.
went to sand it tonight (24 hours since applied)
paint PEELED off in large sheets that fell the consistency of a disposable rubber glove.
i am assuming it was not completely dry???
im basically back to square 1 on this.
Paint and primer same brand- “Tremclad” rust paint (not sure if it’s something sold outside or Canada??
I know I screwed up not thinning it but now I’m questioning if that’s my only problem.
anyone with paint experience please feel free to call me names 😉and tell me what I did wrong

This was oil based enamel with the enamel hardener right ? Very odd ... I don’t think the thinning of it had much effect on curing .. Compatible primer for the paint ? Primer sanded to slick maybe ?

Did a little more reading and yes oil based rust paint made by Rustolium, i think it is just their Canadian trademark name
hardener is DuPont,”Centauri, and says for Acrylic, Urethane, enamel (was all I could find locally)
as for thinning, I’m having the same issue finding what I need (and honestly question if I know what I need) mineral spirits????
Confused and questioning it all now🤔

Craaap! Just read the fine print on the label!
“Water based Technology “
there’s my problem 😡 glad I only bought a quart 🤬
Primer says oil based
Colour says Water based !

Same name brands only work together IF you use the same type materials...

Yup I get it.
will have to take a magnifying glass , chemist and a lawyer next time I go paint shopping 🤓
i do realize you can’t lay water based paint over oil based.
and who knows what oil hardener does to water based paint 🤔
I fully expected that all “rust paint” would be the same (oil based) and was NOT very clearly marked on the label.
anyone else doing the same work make sure you read the labels closely.
this was Tremclad/ Rustolium and I assume the water based is their low V.O.C. /low odour solution.
live and learn.

Redtruck12, look at it this way, it wasn't a mistake, but actually a learning lesson...

I have to agree with you about reading, or trying to read labels. There was the days that never gave me much problem. But as I get older, the manufacturers are reducing the font sizes. on those labels... That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Same problem...
and I think my arms have become shorter over the years as well 😉 can’t seem to hold things far enough away to read the big print sometimes 🤔

When you mixed the hardener and paint, did you let it “cook” for a while?

Thanks for the response.
The whole problem is I accidentally bought and used water based paint (same brand)
got the right paint today and trying a test piece, I let that “cook” as directed, will see tomorrow how it cures/dries
