I got involved with fly fishing a while back. then got started making flies. took me a while to find a store near enuff for the supplies.

I have been archery hunting for 15 years now with my compound bow. all arrows and accesories i have ordered from cabelas. last year i bought a recurve bow and was using it for bow fishing. got the idea to use it this year instead of my traditional compound bow.

Problem is that i only have three cedar shaft arrows. I would like to get the shafts, vanes and points to build my own arrows.

Does any one hunt with traditional archery equipment, if so where do you get your supplies.

Re: Traditional Archery

My brother in law used compound, switched to recurve, then switched to a straight stick bow.
Now he builds bows. As far as arrows, he buys them in matched sets. I forget the terminology, but it has to do with the wood flex and flight characteristics. He says he would never attempt to make them. ???

He is bow hunting for bear in Canada for the next 9 days. I will email him and ask his sources.

Re: Traditional Archery

roscoe---> I know that certain arrows are supposed to be used with certian bows. when making the arrows one does have to be carefull. But most arrows come almost already made. you just need the shafts. with the shafts you just put tips, nocks, vanes. when i say i want to make my own arrows, i really mean just assemble them. i just need to a good place purchase the parts.

Wikelam,
Try www.LancasterArchery.com

1-800-829-7408

Remember that you will need to know what spine weight you want. If you are new to recurves and need help on this, just let me know. I can give you a good starting point. Also need a taper tool, fletch jig, Fletch tite, and Nocks. Don't forget your tips/broad heads. Are you going to add your own crest? Email me if you still have trouble getting your supplies...I can help get whatever you need.

One last note, I shoot regular Easton Alums with my flat bow. Ever consider just trying that? Of course, if you want to go strictly traditional, stick with the Cedar. Happy bullseyes.

Coach

OK.
My brother in law is quite the eccentric when it comes to this stuff.
I know he buys arrows from a guy that custom makes the shafts and tests them to create matched sets of arrows, and they are not cheap. I remember swallowing hard, when he told me the price.

Maybe these guys have what you want, there are a bunch of links at the very bottom of the page.

http://www.borg.com/~tollgate/tollgate10f.htm

Re: Traditional Archery

I am new to archery (last year) and have a Fred Bear Grizzly Recurve. I started with some easton arrows that i had from my compound but they did not fly right they were to light. So I went to a highly recomended bow shop that used to build his own recurves etc. He set me up with some carbon arrows that are tapered (thicker towards the front) and quite heavy and 125gr points. The arrows are stamped 'Traditional' I must say that currently I have no reason to change as I find they fly nice. Sorry I am little help beyond that, Let us know what you discover. Also if you do not have any luck finding your ceader shafts let me know and I can get his # for you as I know he has Lots of blank ceaders.
