I need to replace the two woods with the approximate size 2x6 that the boat sat on while on the trailer, I am not sure what is the proper name for them, base on my research it might be call "bunks". Is there a special type of 2x6 board that I need to get? Can I get these from Lowes, Home Depot, etc? And there's a carpet wrap on it, what type of carpet is this and what type of glue or staples use to hold it in place?

Re: Trailer bunks replacement help please.

Just use plain old 2x6 southern yellow pine. They'll last for years, and are cheap.

You don't say if you're running fiberglass or aluminum boat. I prefer to stay away from CCA pressure treated 2x6's on aluminum boats, as the copper in the liquid may deteriorate your aluminum.

I wrap my bunks in cheap indoor outdoor carpet purchased at Lowes' flooring department. Last time, I tried to buy 1 foot (12' wide), but they won't cut less than 2'. I attach the carpet with 1 1/2" roofing nails.

Thank you for your input. Now the next steps is what is the best way to lift the boat off the bunks while replacing the old one while the boat/trailer is on land? By the way this is fiberglass 18 ft boat.

Since you are replacing the entire bunk, the easiest way by far is to launch the boat and replace the bunk using cordless tools. I have no idea how you can do this on land ??????

Lower the trailer tongue jack, and block the rear of the boat. Crank the jack up and watch the magic happen. Block the front of the boat. Give her a quick shake to make sure all is stable. Carry on with your bunk replacement.

I replaced my bunks with the boat on the trailer. Mine is a 19 foot and it has 4 weight bearing bunks. Used a floor jack with a short 2x4 between the jack plate and the fiberglass. Lifted one side a couple of inches and removed and replaced the bunks for that side one at a time. Set it back down and did the other side. As I noted I had two bunks on each side. If you only have one you shuld figure a way to make sure if something slips the boat falls on some type of support. Maybe stack some 2x4s across the cross members on your trailer so it can't come down if the jack slips.

This sounds great! Can't wait to try it. Oh wait, I just bought a new trailer. Oh well, I'll try it when it's time to clean the hull. Oh wait, it's way overdue. Ok, when the weather is right. All kidding aside, thanks for sharing. I like it!

OK I am admitting I am dumb. What is "tongue jack"?

Anyways, Thank you everyone for your ideas. I have a clear vision now on how to go forward with my project.

It's what holds the front of the trailer up when you unhook from the tow vehicle. Some have a foot, others have a wheel.
