trailer height questions

last year i picked up a 1996 crestliner 1750 sport fish on a yacht club trailer. i noticed that on the back support going across the trailer there is(was) a bracket for a light in the center. this is all smashed up and bent. i figured it was being towed with too tall of a truck. i'm using a 2005 ford sporttrac to tow it and had to use a 6" drop hitch to level out the trailer. the ***-end of the trailer still hits when the ground is too uneven or going up into parking lots or gas stations. my questions are can i flip the axle? right now the axle is mounted between the springs (slipper springs) and trailer frame. this set up leaves me about 2-3" space before it bottoms out. its a 2"x3" box axle and with the flip i could gain about 5" more inches of clearence. OR i was looking at the way the whole axle-spring-fender setup was connected to the trailer frame. it looks like i can unbolt two u-bolts from each side, drop it all and add a 2" spacer between it and the frame, get longer u-bolts and tighten it back up. this should get me 2" of more clearence. i have no clue!!! has anybody out there tried this or something close to it? please help!!!

p.s. - having problem with pics. will post soon.

Absolutely you can move your axle under your spring instead of on top.... just don't turn your axle over.... axles are made with a slight cover which you want up, so that when they take the weight of your boat they level out.

Agreed, an axle flip is very common. I would recommend getting new u bolts made tho. You really shouldn't re-use the old ones. Check with a local trailer shop, or a axle shop. Shouldn't cost more than $20 or so
