Directional and Brake lights function OK when parking lights are off.

When parking lights are on both directionals blink together when either right or left signal is on.

When parking lights are on and the brake is pressed - signal and parking lights go off.

Any suggestions for fixing this problem?

Re: Trailer Lights

Could use a little more info,is this new wiring,a 4 prong flat plug,7 pin round, etc. But I did run into something like this once when the backup lights wire got tied in as a ground when going from a 7 pin to a 4 pin. Good luck

Re: Trailer Lights

First,I'd plug in plug in the car into a different trailer to make sure the problem is in the trailer, then all I can say is check the usual things such as grounds (funny thing grounds, had a car once with a bad ground, stepped on the brake and the front parking lights would come on but no brake lights ), bulb sockets or a freyed wire harness.Sometimes it's a whole lot easier to just put in a whole new trailer harness for 7 or 8 bucks then to spend hours running down all the possibilities.Just make sure you use solder and shrink tube on the splices and not the crimp spicers that come with the wiring kits. And don't forget the dielectric grease in the bulb sockets.Good luck again.R.B.

------------------

Barrier...

What's your opinion of the shrink type crimp connectors? I've had good luck with them as long as you don't penetrate the connector with crimpers.

Walt

Re: Trailer Lights

I think there great inside a car or motorhome where there not going to get any abuse, but out in the open I still like solder. Most people dont have the right crimpers to get a good solid crimp and they end up pulling apart, plus if the shrink tube gets a hole, with a soldered joint I dont have to worry about corrosion.

Re: Trailer Lights

Jackk,
Sounds like you have the wrong wiring harness on the vehicle side.

Was the harness factory installed or was it added after the fact?

4pin flat harnesses (car side) come in two different configurations:
1) Ones for vehicles with stop and tail lights in the same bulb, and
2) Ones for vehicles that have separate tail lights and separate brake lights.

It sounds to me like the wrong one was installed on your vehicle. The best type to use are the ones designed for your specific vehicle that have a "T" harness that will plug into your existing vehicle wiring harness. These can be found almost anywhere and they are about 15-30 bucks.

Nav :)

Re: Trailer Lights

Jackk,

I would first start with your ground. Is the trailer on the hitch while testing? Spray some WD40 on the ball and hitch it up again. Drive around the block to get a good ground. Then test the system again. You can check your car plug with a 12volt tester purchased at any Wal-Mart. Trust me you will use it again so buy it. As mentioned above, if the plug from your vehicle itsn't the right type then you are wasting time. The trailer wires are the easy part. whit-ground, brown-taillights, green-rightstop/blinker, yellow-leftstop/blinker

Good luck.

Re: Trailer Lights

Thanks for your replys to my trailer light problem.

The problem was the ground on the truck. I went over the connectors and retaped the clips. When I have some more time I'll solder or use shrink tubes.

jackk
