let me ask you a question then,,, have you even been stranded by a interstate with a flat trailer tire,,,thats not the time to take a chance on a under rated tire,

No thanks. Last time I used my spare was over 100 miles to where I got the flat tire replaced. My spare is the exact tire and rim that I have on my trailer.

Penny wise....pound foolish to use a temporary car spare.

If you have a little row boat that be fine, anything over 1,500 pounds I would get a real tire

Sorry I made a post...I apologize mh

Ron. I gather from your profile that you own smaller, open, utility, jon boat type boats. I bet they are all well under 2000lbs rolling on the trailer.

For that purpose, I see no reason not to use a mini donut tire in an emergency. But off highway, moderate speeds and not far, just as the mini tires list as their specs.

You owe no one here an apology, not in this topic, nor in any of our other forums.

They simply disagree w your choice, and for their boats, nope, minis arent a wise choice.

The issue here is the tire load rating vs boat weight.

For most 14 ft and under Jon boats... it can work. Maybe some bigger boats but probably not for anything in the fiberglass Bass Boats or heavier.

You can blow out an under-rated tire in less than 5 miles.

Ron, you owe no one an apology. Some of us HAVE to be thrifty.....nothing to be ashamed of, thats the way it is period. A car tire for a spare will be fine for your 12 foot boat. I have pulled farm/construction utility trailers for years with used passenger car tires and never had a problem.

I thought used car tires was a good idea once, had them on both wheels. no spare - then boom blow one out in the middle of no mans land. car full of kids, wife, gear. On they way to a far away lake. not fun. luckily as luck would have it . Just around the bend was a tiny town with a farm equipment repair place, they had some old used 15 inch super swampers got em mounted up. and continued on. needles to say probably the worst trip of my life...

If a car weighs 3000 lbs and you put a donut on the front thats maybe 1000 lbs seems like it would work in an emergency for the average boat

I mis-read OP. I thought he was asking about car tires which would be ok. The donut tire might be ok for a short trip in an emergency.

Yeah, I was pulling my granpas boat, that spare came with the boat, used boat and trailer. Well I ad a flat. Turned out the bolts matched up but the center hub-hole was to small, could not get it over the bearing hub. A proper fitting rim was added to the collection...... I wish my baby spare would have fit, but 5 studs vs 4 don't work.......

Comparing car tires and trailer tires are like comparing apples and zucchini, they are both plants, that's about it. Most people wouldn't run trailer tires on their car, why would you run car tires on your trailer. The differences between the two are numerous and I won't go int to all the differences here. No reputable tire shop would put car tires on a trailer or put trailer tires on your car. If an accident occurred they would be sued out of business. Do a little research on the net re the diff between trailer and car tires and you will see. Safety wise the two most important things on your car or trailer are the tires and brakes. Why jeopardize safety to save a few bucks. Even if you only plan to use a spare in an emergency for a short drive. If you can afford a boat you certainly must be able to afford a spare trailer tire.
