Hello,

Need a patch for this tire...any advice? All kidding aside, I went to a trailer shop and they told me that I need to change my tires every five years. Funny thing is, the guy sold me a "new" tire that had an '06 date on it! Discovered after I put the "new" tire on my trailer. Should I be concerned with an outdated "new" tire?

Thanks in advance, Eric 22' Davis

Re: Trailer Tire Advice

I would be! I wouldn't even buy one that old for a spare. Either he doesn't sell many of that size/brand, or he bought old stock from somewhere else. I specify not older than 6 months for any tire I buy, same for batteries ... ;)

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, how do you tell how old a tire is?

I bought a new pontoon and trailer in 2008. After the first season I noticed both tires had severe cracking in the tread and on the sidewall. I checked the date code and the tires were several years old. They were replaced by the dealer.

Isn't this the thing that cast ford to stop buing goodyears, and they made the switc to bridstones. After several rollovers with old tires on them.

I think that was Firestone that had the problem, though it was a interesting problem, Ford was recommending a lower tire pressure then Firestone was to improve ride quality and the tires were over heating and delaminating.

Re: Trailer Tire Advice

...I learned my lesson a few years ago when just before a long trip I looked at my trailer tires and noticed a "little" bit of dry rot (small cracks on the sidewalls). Thinking it would last till the end of the season I started the trek, halfway to the shore the darn thing blew-out and almost ruined a good day of boating. Never run on even slightly dry rotted tires, always have a good spare (or two) and now, I personally buy tires that are over-rated for my load.

Re: Trailer Tire Advice

I was once in the tire business, we would sometimes get inventory that was already a couple of years old from the distributor, especially when it came to trailer tires, ag tires, etc. Tire stores don't sell nearly as many trailer tires as passenger tires so they can easily sit on the rack for quite a while. And yes, they do age just sitting on the rack or out of the sun and you do need to change them every 6-7 years. Too many potential issues not to make it worth the investment in new tires.

Re: Trailer Tire Advice

I bought a new boat in 2007. It had GOOD FORAYEAR Marathons on it. I got rid of them and put COOPER 8 ply trailer tires on the trailer. I kept the GOOD FORAYEAR Marathon on the trailer for a spare. The tire has always been covered with a spare tire cover. Went to the lake yesterday and home. The tire was fine. I went out this morning and there is a bulge in the tire the size of a baseball. It has "ZERO" miles on it. Dealership has ordered me another one.

I ask if I could just get a cash refund, so I could get another brand, and the answer was no !!! (I understand his position). But wow......... ZERO miles and all is pretty pathetic !!! OH YEAH, the tire was made in the U.S.A.
