our boat trailer has 14" rims .... I would appreciate recommendations for tires to be used for summer towing, long distances, at highway speeds

Re: Trailer Tires

Kenda Loadstars are my favorite - I get them from etrailer in a D load rating. Knowing what size you are using would help, so would the weight of your boat/trailer/gear.

now that is really interesting .... Kenda Loadstars have a terrible reputation in the RV (travel trailer/5th wheel) community .... the spec sheet on our boat shows it should weigh around 1,500 lbs .... no clue as to the weight of its 90 hp Johnson outboard .... can carry up to 42 gallons of fuel .... no clue as to the weight of the trailer

Trailer Tire Life

in the RV (travel trailer/5th wheel) world tires are expected to have about a 5 year lifespan .... failures due to dry rot and tire walls growing hard due to sitting so much of the time are very common .... is that true for boat trailer tires

Re: Trailer Tire Life

I merged your two questions....no need for separate threads.

I would go to a tire dealer and ask what they recommend and have available. Allot depends on axle alignment and weight distribution. A trailer that is out of line will / can destroy a tire in one trip.

My old bass boat trailer tires were high speed balanced since I pulled that boat long distances on the highway.

I have Maxxis and they have been great so far. Only 1 full year out of them though.

And very limited sizing/load ranges for boat trailers ;) But given the light weight of your boat/trailer, you should be able to get a tire in just about any brand. Guessing that as long as you plan for 2500 you'll be fine - actual weight is probabally 2100.

10-4 .... guidance appreciated .... is there any problem with using tires other than those officially marketed as "Trailer Tires"

Mostly that they won't fit most boat trailers and if they do fit then they generally do not have a high enough load rating. I use light truck tires on my car trailer and they work fine.

What size are your current tires?

+1 on the Maxxis. Had them on for 2 yrs now, and still almost new looking. A lot of other trailer tires I have tried over the last 14 yrs, always bubbled, or didn't last long. I got mine online.. Tire discount I think. I also have a set (6) Maxxis commercial highway tires on my Dually for 4 years. Great tires, I love em.

I have 9 year old Goodyear Marthons on my boat trailer. They still have great tread and no cracks after all this time. They still hold air great too.
