Re: trailer weight

I just went through this. 3500 lbs max probably. What size axle? If its 1 1/2 inch, its probably 1500 lbs.

Probably the best place to start.

Crawl underneath and look on the axel for a weight rating. Most have a stamped rating on them (assuming rust hasn't had it's way with it). Otherwise, you need to pull a hub and measure the spindle and bearing sizes.

Re: trailer weight

Remove a wheel and check bearings. 1-1/16 inner AND outer you have a 2000# axle so 2000# is the maximum (boat, trailer, gas, batteries and other stuff) regardless what size tires you have. If the outer bearing is 1-1/16 and inner is 1-3/8 you have a 3500# axle. Same restrictions apply but now you need to check the load capacity on the sidewall of the tire and that number x2 applies ONLY when inflated to the maximum indicated on the tire. Axle diameter alone does not mean a thing. It is the spindles when mated to that axle that determines the capacity of the axle.

What??? Everyone I have talked to said that because my axles are 1 1/2" square tubing, they are NO MORE than 1800 each, but most likely 1500# each. The diagram in the sticky says, "between 1500 and 2000".

And from what I have learned, there is no way to actually know the max load of the axle.

Re: trailer weight

There most certainly is a way to know. I just pointed it out. Spindle/bearing size determines that. 1-1/16 inch spindles are generallyh rated at 750# each. You have two on a single axle trailer. Therefore those spindles provide a MAX load of 1500#. It doesn't matter if the spindle is welded to a water pipe or a section of railroad track or whether you have the largest available tires installed\. The spindle determines the axle capacity.
