Hey guys I have a Dodge Durango and I bought a new trailer wiring kit. I have the brown and yellow cords to each of the lights. My kit also came with and adapter peicie with differnt color wires that i think you wire in to the brown and yellow. Right now I am using the plug with the yellow and brown right into it. And when I signal both lights blink but the brake lights do work. When I have the lights on, they run then when I tap the brake they go off. I think I need to wire using the adapter plug. Does anyone know what the combination of the colors are for wiring the kit.?? For example what wires do the solid brown and brown with the black stripe and the yellow and yellow with brown strip go to on the adapter?? The kit is a universial kit from walmart if that helps Thanks.

Re: Trailer wiring

I think the key problem is the word "universal"<br />my recommendation is to go to a NAPA, etc. or a place that installs hitches, and buy a unit made for your truck. I would stay with a name brand like TAP, REESE, DRAWTITE, LITE-MATE, etc. Using a universal usually causes more problems, (in my opinion :)

Also swap out your turn signal flasher for one thats made for trailers if you haven't done that yet. I had somewhat the same problem (blinking lights). Everytime I'd out the brakes on all the lights would come on, and they'd all flash fast with the turn signal on. Also make sure all your grounds are good.

Re: Trailer wiring

Thanks for the replies but please tell me if I am doing something wrong. I already have a hitch and I have the factory wiring harness installed (have used on my buddies boat works fine) Here is how I havet things set up. In the Directions it has both brown wires going to the left and the yellow wires going to the right. Of course there is a negative strip wire on each side. I have them wired to the matching lights. I have the regualr plug with the yello wnad brown wires going into it. I have re-grounded 3 times. My kit that i have had another plug end with different color wires includig a ground. So I am wondering if that is wat i need to wire up to get the correct sginals etc....And what the wirning combinations are for doing that.

Re: Trailer wiring

Your truck connector has 4 wires going to the trailer.<br /><br />1 is for the ground<br />1 is for left turn signal<br />1 is for right turn signal and<br />1 is for tail lights.<br /><br />If you get the right and left turn signals working you will also have brake lights.

Re: Trailer wiring

On the tow vehicle side usually there are 4 wires unless you have separate directional lights and brake lights. Then you will need a 5 wire to 4 wire adapter.<br />The colors should be:<br />Yellow- L. side stop & turn signal<br />Brown- Tail, Marker,Clearance & License<br />White- Ground<br />Green- R. side stop & turn signal<br /><br />On the trailer side if you have a split harness it should be:<br /><br />White- Trailer Ground<br /><br />Yellow & Yellow with a color stripe (Brown)-Left tail light.<br />Green & Green with a color stripe (Brown)- Right tail light.<br /><br />The wire with the color stripe corresponds to the Brown wire on each tail light.
