I have a 94 duracraft 1542, I am looking at a 2002 yamaha 4 stroke 25, it weights 180 pounds, that is the same as a 2009 50 hp yamaha 2 stroke. Will my trandsom be able to hold the 4 stroke? when my boat was made I dont think it was intended to have a 25 on there that weights that much.

Help me out here

So...what was the most popular 25 hp that your model Duracraft came with? If you can determine that you can compare the weight to the Yammie and kinda get an idea.

Re: Trandsom help

I think the static weight of the motor is a lesser consideration than horse power.

The motor hangs pretty much straight up and down and if you had a motor of the same weight on it before you shouldn't have a problem and you are going from a 50 to a 25 so you actualy are reducing the stress on the transom by half so I wouldn't have a problem doing it.

If you are really concerned you could contact Duracraft and ask them.

No you got it wrong, i had a 15 hp johnon on there. i was saying the 4 stroke i am looking at was 180 lbs, and the new 50 2 stroke was the same weight

Aha, then go with what the rated horse power is, again it is horse power not static weight.

If the boat is rated for a 25 then you are fine.

Transoms are rated for the load of the motor pushing the boat through the water not engine weight, so if it were rated for 25 and you wanted to go 50 then no but a 25 is a 25 regardless of weight.

i disagree. they were designed for the horsepower, but also the weight of the motors. you go form a 75 # motor bouncing around on a transom while trailering, is a lot different than 180# motor bouncing around. you cannot tell me that the weight difference, does not stress the transom, even with a transom saver.

Also depends on the condition of the transom itself. There should be a tag on the transom giving a horsepower rating for the boat. If no tag is there,I think someone on here can tell you where to find that info.-
I have a '72 Lund that came with a 8 hp motor. Everything was fine till I hung a 35hp on it,and the old transom started to curve out. Then when I added a homemade jackplate,it curved out a little more! Scary. But a few hours work and new wood in the transom, and I've got a great little boat that will get up and go!

Re: Trandsom help

My point was if it is rated for a 25 then it really doesn't matter whether it is a 2 or 4 stroke motor, it will hold the extra 30-40lbs of a 4 stroke, but yes, a heavier motor will put more stress on the transom.

There have been several post recently about "my motor weights... will my transom hold it" again my point was the rating has more to do with power than weight.
