My 2005 Expedition has a very slight T case leak. Does anyone have an opinion on those additives (Lucas et al) that are supposed to recondition seals? Since the T case takes the same fluid as the tranny I wondered if it might be worth a shot. Thoughts?

Re: Transfer Case Leak

Have not seen one that works yet, and I have been driving 4x4's for over 30 years now.

Do the gasket thing. Won't leave reminders of your visit in the friends driveway.

Re: Transfer Case Leak

Check your vent on the T/C. It may be plugged causing the pressure to build up and push past the seal. If not get it done right .

I used some of that tranny seal once, right before ripping out the tranny to replace the pump seal,,, and it fixed the leak...

I would investigate to see where it's leaking first, it might be something that the snake oil couldn't possibly fix.

You'd be better off repairing the leak. You didn't say where it's leaking. If it's an output shaft seal, they are usually pretty easy to replace. Let us know where it's leaking. Good luck!

Lucas is pretty big on Stop-Leak products. My power steering was leaking and I added the Lucas stuff and it stopped it! Their transmission Stop Leak has a chemical in it that swells neoprene seals, O-rings and gaskets....I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try! When the boss-lady starts ripping you about those oil spots in the driveway, you can at least say you tried! Good Luck!:)

The spots are in the garage, so the admiral doesn't even notice them, but even if she did she'd be more likely to complain about the constantly rotating cast of trailers that graces the driveway. I told my neighbor the other day I was sorry they had to live next to Sanford and Son, but she has a great sense of humor and said she actually enjoys all the activity. I had the Expy on the lift at the Ford place a couple weeks ago and they indicated the case would need to be split, so I assume that means it's not the output shaft seal. Think I'll just keep the fluid up and keep an eye on it as it's really a negligible leak, then when I feel like spending five bills on it I'll take it in. It's really not bad at all. I will check the vent though. Thanks guys.

Not a bad thing to check on, this is also true for differentials, I would try Lucas, I mean why not!

Re: Transfer Case Leak

You know, a Leak is one thing and a Weep is another...lots of things on cars have weeps, where some fluid gets past the gasket or seal and shows up on the bottom of the case. Add the Lucas stop-leak, run it about a week to give the magic fluid time to work, then clean the case with carb cleaner, then I'll bet you a burger that "weep" of yours has quit!:;)

Re: Transfer Case Leak

There is a difference between a seal leak and a gasket leak, seals can be popped out and replaced without removing the transfercase with the exception of the input shaft.
Gasket are usually a split the case scenario.
