Get the thing diagnosed. Consider the diagnostic fee part of the maintenance expense for a car with 140K miles on the transmission.
Not a bad deal, in my opinion.
Once you learn what the problem is, and get a couple estimates for repairs, you can then choose what to do next.

This car has never has any engine issues for us.
That was a one time deal I think. Fuel was very low (Past the E) and I think it sucked a bit of water.
