Not much help in the title. Am replacing the transom on a 1984 Galaxy 17' BR. Got almost all the "stuck on" plywood off of the inside of the transom and will be grinding and making templates soon. In the process of looking and dreaming (err...planning) didn't like the look of the transom cutout. Got a good straight edge (not a piece of lumber) and placed across the outside of the transom. The edges of the cutout are about 1/8" "drawn in" off the straight edge. It tapers from about 4" out and gets to the 1/8" max at the edge of the hole.

Will this "straighten" itself when it gets new real wood behind it? Has this taken place over so many years that the transom has now taken a set and I will have problems installing the wood for the transom? Will I need to apply special techniques to "push it back" when I install the new transom wood?

Hopefully someone has faced this before and has an answer.

Thanks for any and all comments.

Re: Transom cutout is drawn in....

first of all....take nothing forgranted.

nothing will just "fix it self"

i dont know if im understanding you correctly.....it sounds like you are talking about a bowed transom.....pics would really help......

in the hull extension thread, there is a toutorial of a transom instlation...in cluding the front and back braces on the transom....that will fix any bow.

cheers

Re: Transom cutout is drawn in....

Thanks for the reply oops!

The BOW in the transom is only around the cut out. About 4 inches either side the transom is straight above and below. It is also straight three feet to the left and right of the hole. It gives one the feeling that the outdrive pushing without anything behind it (inner transom wood was sooo much parchment) that it was deformed. I have no way of knowing how long it has been that way.

So I guess the BOW is very localized.

Thanks again!!

Re: Transom cutout is drawn in....

My outboards' transoms have been rotted out and had taken pronounced arcs from the weight of the motors. The new plywood straightened them right out...
