Transom/Engine shaft Length

I have a 1992 16' Valco Bayrunner that has had the transom cut down down approx. +6" which leave the height of the transom approx. +17". It appears the original height was somwhere between 24"/25". I am going to restore the transom back to it's original height.
Will I have to use a 25" shaft motor or can I run a 20" shaft?

Re: Transom/Engine shaft Length

The shaft length needs to be close to the transom height, so a 25" of one needs a 25" of the other. It doesn't need to be exact though because the motor can be adjusted a little for height.

You could also install a hydraulic Jack Plate and run an outboard with a 20'' leg. Just set it up so your cavitaion plate is even with the bottom of the hull. You can then move it up or down as needed for performance and better fuel milage. Just be sure to run a water pressure gauge so you now there is enough water getting to the engine for cooling.

This one has 5'' of vertical travel and will handle up to a 300hp V6 outboard.

the problem with running a shorter shaft motor, is you have to have set back enough for the upper part of the motor to clear the transom, also how are you going to tilt the motor, when the transom is in the way. so now you need a set back jack plate. then when slowing the boat quickly, or back trolling, your motor gets swamped buy waves.

Just buy the correct motor for the boat.
