Transom/engine weight?

Hi all,
I have a Dejon 14 cabin boat circa mid 1980's and I'm thinking of fitting a 25hp 4-stroke but at 96kgs the engine is a lot heavier than the 20 2-stroke I'm using at present.Has anyone any idea what the max Transom weight is for this boat? Can't find any indication on the Transom itself.Do boats have any sort of 'VIN' plate (like cars have) hidden away somewhere?Tried a few boatyards but they're not sure.Any help much appreciated.

Re: Transom/engine weight?

Hi, Phil.

Transom strength is for handling the thrust and torque of an engine. Engine weight is rarely an issue.

Your boat's maximum HP rating should be your guide, and as long as the transom is in good shape you have no worries.

You might check into the new Honda lightweight family of 15 to 25 HP 4 stroke engines, but I think any 4 stroke within the HP limits would be safe to use.

If you trailer her, it is always safer to use a transom saver than not to.

Good luck. :)

Re: Transom/engine weight?

Thanks JB,

I've seen quite a few of these boats with 30hp 2-strokes fitted and one or two 40's so I guess I should be OK with a 20 or 25 FS.Checked out the Hondas and their 20FS is even Lighter than my old 2 stroke!I've not heard the term 'Transom saver' before (I'm new on the boating scene!) but I've already fabricated a bracket which attatches to the back of the trailer and supports the leg of the motor while towing.I guess this amounts to the same thing?
Thanks again.
