Transom Glass!

Good! I didn't screw mine up too bad. Mine was more like worm dirt than actual wood. Only 1 4x4" piece was solid enough to take a measurement as to the thickness.

NOW!

I am going to use Exterior Grade CDX plywood for my transom. 2 pieces of 3/4 inch. I'm going to buy it. Let it dry for a few days while laying flat on the shop floor weighted down with some 5 gallon buckets.

Once it's dry I'm gonna cut it to size and dry fit each piece in place then you PL and stainless steel screws to laminate it together for a nice solid bond. This is pretty much the gist of what I've read as to how to do it.

HERE'S THE QUESTION FOR NOW

I know I need to coat the transom in resin and glass to waterproof it.

1. What type of glass? CSM, Biax, Roving or cloth? What weight and how many layers? It will be supporting a 65hp outboard. I want it strong and well waterproofed.

2. Once it's glassed and waterproofed and slid into place, how/ what is the best way to secure it to the outer hull so there is no gap between the transom and the hull?

I've removed the inner skin to scrape out the old worm dirt. So what is the best glass to replace it with? I was thinking CSM followed by some cloth but what weights would work best?

Thanks

Re: Transom Glass!

read the hull ext thread....its all in there....

use a matt-roving layup (matt allways first)

the matt is 1 oz....use roving, (a lighter grade) you wont need biax for that....whatever is cheapest.....

cheers

Re: Transom Glass!

Hey OOPS.

I read your transom installation on the hull extension thread. It's really top notch.

I'm guessing I'll need to use a flapper disk and "ruff and scuff" the inside of the hull and then apply CSM to the mating side of my transom plywood. wet it out and then put it in and bolt it all together like you did. Will this make sure that the transom wood bonds to the exterior side of the hull?

Also,

Where did you use your peanut butter?

Thanks Man.

I'm taking tons of pic and will be starting a restoration thread sometime this weekend (I hope!)
