been busy on the project , So I decided to fix her with layers of A grade plywood . So do I install them 1 at a time with glass between the wood and finnished with 2 layers off mat ?? Or can I screw the 3 boards together and install as an assembly ????

BTW

I have covered each piece in resin to seal it .

Thanks in advance

Re: transom install

I alwsys cut the pieces to fit, then epoxy them together and encapsulate the entire result (stain optional) in epoxy before installation.

Whether I use glass is a function of boat type (aluminum vs fiberglas) and how much of the transom is exposed to view.

Grade "A" ply is O.K., but Marine ply is best. However, once encapsulated and any through bolt holes sealed with #5200, the ply type is not critical.

Seach the past posts and you'll find several step by step posts along with the materials you'll need.

Re: transom install

Definitely go with the Marine grade fir. It is so much better in so many ways.

Depending on the size of the boat and motor, but on most boats a replacement with to sheets of 3/4 plywood is the way to go.

Assuming everything is grinded down and all the surfaces are properly prepared...

First coat board with resin (polyester, vinylester, epoxy) and let it soak in. Mix up some resin with cabosil and milled fibers and trowel the "peanut butter" consistency mixture on to each peace of plywood clamp them together. You could counter-sink some stainless steel deck screws to keep it from slipping around.

Then trowel the same mixture on to the old transom skin and plywood and clamp it down. Then make some fillets along the angle where the bilge/hullsides meet the transom. Then follow with some alternating layers of 1.5 oz mat and roven woven. It would be better if you could get your hands on some double bias stitchmat (ex, 1708). This is non woven with glass mat stitched into it. You would want to do 3-4 layers of this stuff or 6-7 alternating layers of the roven woven and glass mat.
