transom intake to through hull intake

I have a Volvo penta 4.3 OSI 2003 and looking to seal off the raw water intake at the transom and use a though hull fitting.
The intake at the transom is 1". Should I stay with 1" or go larger on the fitting?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... If it's drawin' plenty of water from the drive through a 1" hose, all that way,...

I can't think of any reason it couldn't be fed with a 1" hose from a shorter distance...

It'll All be, below waterline, Right,... the pumps inlet oughta be flooded...

Just be sure you put a seacock on it so you can stop the boat from sinking if a hose breaks.
