Transom Mount Trolling Motor Steer Via Outboard

Hey guys, here's a little history, I am new to the boating world and have been wanting to rig something up! I currently own a 16ft Fibreglass Peterborough boat, with a 50HP Johnson outboard motor. It's more of a cruising type boat, however I'm using it strictly for fishing. One of the problems I have been trying to solve, is being that its an older motor, its not the best for trolling.

I want to purchase a trolling motor, however I do have a tighter budget. I know I can simply use a bow mount motor and solve all of my issues, however if I could save money it would obviously be much better for me. The transom mount is much cheaper then the bow mount, but its not reasonable to sit at the back and steer it tiller-style.

I was thinking about somehow rigging the motor so I could mount the transom mount as normal, but run some sort of bar or other mechanism to the outboard shaft in order to steer the trolling motor with my steering wheel! I have quite a bit of material laying around, but I'm not much of an engineer to come up with an idea to be able to do this!

If anyone has any suggestions, or if someone has attempted this themselves, please send me a photo or try to explain on how I can do this,

Thanks to all in advance :)

Like this? I made it from a couple of old tie bars and two go kart steering ball ends.
