Dose any one know if the mounting bracket for a 1985 johnson 90hp would be the same as a 85hp force outboard if been reading and some people say the mounting pattern is an industry standard? How hard is it just to swap outboards? I have the controles for the johnson. what is needed to do a swap do i just need new cables to accomadate the distance to the helm in the new boat. Thanks in advace!!

Re: Transom mounting

New cables AND controller, change the gas fittings if you use a portable tank to the OMC type. The mounting should be OK. Make sure you have the right cable ends (shift and throttle) for the Johnson motor also. You will also need the engine to controller harness.

Re: Transom mounting

I mean the harness with a big plug at the end that plugs into a mating plug at the front of the lower pan on the motor. The other end is attached to the controller. I don't think you'll have to drill any new holes.

Ok now I know what your talking about. Is the sterring linkage also a standard or will I have to get a new sterring system.

The steering is the same, but the link from engine to end of steering cable might be different.

Re: Transom mounting

Can you just replace the end of the cable?
Not quite sure what you mean. If the cable goes through the tilt tube with a link to the engine, replace the link.
If you have a cable attached to the boat and the end straight to the engine steering arm, the 'old' from Force should fit in the OMC steering arm.
Post a pick of your cable end??

Re: Transom mounting

Ok i get what your saying. I havent started the repower just wanted to know whats involved in it and if it would be simple. Im still looking for the boat it going to be a bayliner capri and they all have a force on the back so I just wanted to make sure im not in over my head when I do get to start it. But it sounds like the johnson should just mount up to the bolts in the transom from the force and then you just have to wire up the controls, change the gas fittings and possibly the sterring link. Dosent sound that hard at all. Thanks alot guys!!
