I am seriously considering purchasing a Hurricane Sundeck 187 for use at a cottage in Ontario. In addition to the countless amenities, I prefer the fibreglass deck and hull however, am concerned about the wood transom/stringers.

The boat would sit in the water from May through Oct. and stored indoors over the winter (but subject to freezing temperatures).
Since I plan on enjoying the boat for many years (20+), I have been cautioned about the potential for rot occurring in the pressure treated plywood transom of this boat. Since I prefer an outboard, I understand that water may access the wood in the drilled bolt mounting and drain holes and have heard of one such occurrence on another (slightly older) Hurricane model.

The dealer plans on using silicone but after reading through this site over the past few hours, I don't know if that would be adequate.

Should I stay away from a boat with a PTP transom?
Can the holes be sealed permanently after drilling? Any information on this boat or PTP transoms would be much appreciated. :) Thanks

Re: Transom on a Hurricane

You are worring too much about the boat. These are well built boats and if your Mechanic mounts the motor correctly, you will have no problems. 3M 5200 sealant is the choice of most Mechanics to permanently seal the holes in the transom. Drain holes are sealed as well.. Silicone is not acceptable for sealing the holes. Enjoy the boat and don't worry about it. If you are concerned about the holes, insist on 3M sealer be used for the holes in the transom..
