I am just starting to do a transom replace on a 28' Chaperall cuiser merc. 350 engine alpha 1 outdrive. I disconnected the engine and shifted it foward as far as I can to get to the inside transom plate I am not able to lift engine completly out which would be nice but I can see where the exhaust tubes mount to the transome but I can't tell If they are mounted to the transom plate or just to the transom alone. My question is do I need to remove the exhaust tubes before the transom plate or will they come off with the transom plate in one peice. I can't tell if the exhaust tube are held with a wood screw into the transom or machine bolts into transom plate all I can see are the 12pt. bolt heads. I will later add a question on lineing up the engine and outdrive. I am not disturbing the outer skin so I will have all the original mounting holes and same with the engine mounts I marked everything so it can be put back in place as close as I can. Thanks for reading. John

Re: Transom plate removal

Thank you for the quick reply do I have to remove the Y pipe first or will it come off with the transom plate in one peice. I am working in a tight spot and have to do alot by fill so it would be nice if the Y pipe came off with the plate Thanks John

Well I quess that answers that question Thanks again can't wait till Monday to get going. I was very lucky the man adjusting my shift cable noticed the transom flexing when he shifted from foward to reverse when I opened a couple of holes in the inner skin there was nothing but wet sawdust in between the inner and outer skins I can't beleive that my transom didn't split on the outside and sink my boat we use it alot. Re: Transom plate removal

Yes the outdrive is off and I am going to have to struggle with the engine move foward the boat is on the trailer and I would have to lift the engine about 7' high to get it out of the boat and don't have the facility to do a complete removal that would definatly be the way to go if I could remove it.
