ok here it goes ....I have a older stardust cruiser houseboat with a inline 6 .......the boat sank in fresh water for about 5 hours....well we retrieved it and have been working on it ...the outdrive busted off of it when it hit the bottom of the lake.....and it was so messed up that it is beyond repair......I have a 1980 something sea ray with a mercruiser engine v8 and outdrive that is great shape and running ........the houseboat has a big rubber transom boot to seal it all up and the sea rays out drive mounts right to the hull of the boat......what has to be done to swap in the mercruiser engine and drive ..from the omc one.......anything would be great ..as i stated I am very new here and hope that this is the right place to post this question .....thanks

transom questions

I am going from a 60's model stringer motor I6 that has a big rubber transom seal ...and wanting to repower it with a 80'smodel mercruiser v8 and outdrive.....I know that I cant use the existing transom boot ...the boat is a 48ft steel hull houseboat..........do i have to weld up that big transom hole and re-cut a new hole for the mercruiser outdrive.......and how thick does it need to be and is there a lot of pressure on that area

Re: transom questions

so your old boat has a big old OMC stringer drive hole and you want to put in an 80's something mercruiser.

yes, you will have to seal the hole and re-cut a new hole. the thickness for transoms for mercruiser drives are between 2.0 and 2.25

Re: transom questions

You are talking about allot of work. The mounts, the transom, and wiring. I will be honest and say it is a bit out of our league here for that but we could try.

Are you planning on doing this or are you going to have it done? I imagine it will require quite a large work area and the transplant is just not an easy project regardless of the hull.

Re: transom questions

Bob, the OP has a few threads started on this. I would suggest merging.

Re: transom questions

i am going to be doing it all myself......I am good with all tools and have built all kinds of stuff...from wood to metal ...welding cutting you name it and i can do it ......im not to worried about the wiring ....thats the easy part.....im just worried about the transom.....the thickness that is already there is like a 16th or a 8th of an inch or something ......but i didnt know if there is a required gap thickness of the transom for proper alignment and fit for the outdrive to the rest of the motor .....i know that there is a driveshaft that makes it all work and I dont want it pinched to tight in there ..........my idea was to weld it all up and use the other boat to make a template for the hole i need to cut ........then i was thinking that i would measure the thickness of the donor boats transom ...........and add that to the inside of the metal transom with marine plywood and just use some 5200 and some screws to hold it all up there ......what do ya think ........another question ....is there any water that flows through the motor to outdrive that would affect the seal between all of that or does it all flow through hoses between the transom

Ayuh,.... That's how it's done,.... Weld it in, reinforce it Real Well, as the Merc pushes on the Transom, not the stringers...

It's gotta be 2" thick, parallel, 'n true, where the housing clamps... Not thicker, 'n not thinner...

your old stringer mount actually mounted to the stringer where the transom was a place to screw the transom seal to. however mercruisers mount to the transom like volvo pentas. that requires the transom to be a structural member.

can you post pics of your engine area? you will need to close up the hole, then add 1.5" of ply, and then build the stringers accordingly.
