I've got an 1988 Sunbird. pulled the motor off for some work, and noticed alot of damage on the transom. The top edge where the top fiberglass meets the back of the transom has a wide seam that looks likeit has ben filled with bondo. Is it OK to pull out all the loose pieces and fill w/bondo again?

On the metal outside aluminum boiler plate, the bottom 2 holes are all corodded (There was some kind of zinc nut on them, may have caused the damage?), and are now way too big. Are these available from marine supply stores, or do i need to go to a machine shop?

I should note here that the motor is a 1988 88HP johnson. The lift cylinder is shot and I have to really pull on it to lift the motor.

lastly, the edge that has the wide seam on the top of the transom has a plastic cover that screws over it. It is all cracked and broken. I'm guessing this would be a custom part, but is there anything available i can put there to protect the seam?

Thanks!

Re: Transom repair

The aluminum plate is most likely the previous owners attempt to strengthen a rotten transom. Dig around more and see if the wood is wet and rotten, if the cap is broken and it's been filled with some kind of putty it probably is.

Use the search button at the top of the page and type in rotten transom, sorry.

Ouch!

If the wood seems OK, is putting on a new plate and sealing up the seam OK?

Re: Transom repair

Unfortunately the rest of the transom core PROBABLY is rotted as well.

Drill some holes thru the transom in various parts in an attempt to find some dry wood. If the wood is find, just fill the holes with some epoxy or something suitable

Yes, if it's OK you could find/or make a cap to put over it.

Re: Transom repair

Bondo is OK for dents in cars but not for boats. There are tons of tips right here on the best way to make a repair - - if you can get away with a repair. Read away.

Most likely as others above have said you will end up replacing the entire transom.
