My transom saver from iboats just arrived. Before taking it out of the package, I noticed that there is a sticker on it that says it can only be used with outboards with power trim/tilt, which my 20 Merc does not have.

But there are two holes in the bracket at the trailer end of it. Does anybody see any reason it can't be used by fastening the trailer end on with a good bungee? (In this case, I'll refrain from the duct tape, the right tool for the job, you know.) It seems to me if it's fastened at both ends, there shouldn't be any problem.

You need a saver that is made for non t/t equiped engines.
They are hard to find, but they are out there.

lakelover,

I bought a transom saver years ago (circa 1986?) at Bass Pro Shops for a 9.9hp Evinrude that did not have power tilt/trim.

The transom saver you bought sounds similar to the on I have for the 9.9 Evinrude. A bracket was mounted to the trailer. The transom saver connected to the trailer bracket with a metal pin. A heavy bungee cord connects to the end of the transom saver and engine, holding it in place. I tow the boat all over and never had a problem. Keep in mind though a 9.9hp Evinrude is not a big motor.

roscoe,
What's the difference between the two? It looks substantial enough to support the motor. The ad didn't specify one way or the other, it was a surprise when it arrived.

transom saver

lakelover,

The difference is that the transom savers for TNT engines do not have an attachment cable at the trailer end.

All transom savers have a bungee (usually) cord attachment at the engine end.

TNT engines use hydraulic pressure to hold the transom saver to the trailer. Without, TNT, you have no hydraulic pressure. Thus, just find a way to attach the trailer end of the transom saver to the trailer or the trailer roller. That way, the saver cannot bounce out.

A transom save for non TT is really just a metal bar with a "v" welded on the motor end. It attaches to the trailer via a hole in some cases and the motor leg sits on the "v".
Then a nylon ratchet adjusted strap is passed from one side of the trailer, over the top of the leg and tightened down on the bar.
If you can find a way to connect it to the trailer, you can use it.

Thanks everyone, I didn't see any reason not to attach it to the trailer and use it. Saved again by the bungee. :)
