I bought a 1978 fiberform cabin cruiser for $500, with trailer etc... The engine had been left without cover and had filled with water and was left to sit for a long time.
This was supposedly the only real problem the boat had other than cosmetic and minor repairs. Ive purchased a new short block with flat tops and and a "semi mild" cam. In my investigation and tearing out the motor I found what I now realize is a very common problem in older boats, which is severe rot in the transom and stringers. Im now at about $3500 bucks into this thing which is a lot but I think what I will have in the end will be a very nice boat as I am repairing and or replacing anything I find with a problem. OK now for the question. The boat had a Volvo Penta 5.7L with what I am pretty sure is a 280AQ outdrive. In removing the electro-mechanical lift mechanism I find the reciever in the transom shield is partially broken and was glued back into place with rtv silicone. I'm not sure why anyone would do such a thing as this obviously adds no strength, except for maybe a shoddy mechanic trying to hide a big OOPS. I have been looking for a decent Transom sheild to replace it but find there as many Model numbers for them as there are transom shields. My question then being is how can I find out if there are any others that will replace mine, or do I have to have the exact same number? MIne is a #850678, Ive found many that look identical but have various part #'s. Am I missing something or are these things redesigned for every different engine, maker, year, no of cyls etc...
