O.K. got 86 4.3 cobra setup changed all cables 2yr.s ago. Now I am pretty sure transom cable is bad. It would shift like butter and all of a sudden the last trip out shifted rough and cable broke at the casing. How long do the transom cables last for you guys and gals, yes I do run in salt a couple times during the year if I disconnect transom cable everything is smooth as can be. Will pull outdrive next week and see what is up. Thanks for any feed back......

Howdy,

They last a good long time.

My last one was fine after only about 18 years...... Maybe yours was defective right from the "get-go"

Re: Transom shift cable question

Last time I changed all cables plus the control shifter. I remember the bellows (u-joints) was real tight fit thought someone said the newer ones had more room. It was a real pain to squeez the u-joints thur them I think they are the original ones on there. Thanks for any info on the bellows.... I will change them this time any how....

Can't say. The last transom service kit I had was an after-market one. (I guess they're all aftermarket!!) It looked just like the one I had on the drive.
