Me again, thanks for all your help with the ESA problem, managed to get a new ESA module cheap on Ebay, fitted it got it working, big smile on me face.

Problem is now when yo go into gear the lever that rocks the interupter (the one with the teeth) switch moves down engages the interupter but does not spring back, with no load on it the rocker springs back fine but in gear it seems to get jammed up where the trunnion is, the shift cable is red,

Please help I am so close

ESA Boy

Re: Transom shift cable

I haven't seen your previous posts, but that sure sounds like a bad/binding shift cable to me.

What would you suggest?

Should there be any play in the trunnion

Well, again your post does not describe what brand or year or type of drive you have. When I see that a shift interupt is engaging going into gear under load, the first thing that I think is that the shift cable going to the outdrive is bad, causing a load on the cable when there shouldn't be one. If this is an older OMC, the adjustment is critical, this could be causing your problem.

One other point to the adjustment.
The OMC and Mercruiser drives don't just suddenly need adjusting. If it looks like it needs adjusting, it's because something is going bad, not just going out of adjustment.
Stiff cables are the #1 cause of shift problems in OMC Cobra and Mercruise Alpha drives with shift interrupt systems.

Find the cause of the problem, don't just cover it up with an adjustment.

Lakelivin: I can't seem to get onto that site.

Don S: Do you advise cable replacement then, When you turn the prop and pull the transom shift cable it slips into gear easily. Line up the trunnion to the shift lever and then try it the shift lever rocks down and keeps the interupter engaged, I believe its the trunnion in the slot is not a good fit and it jamming up but in gear there seems to be alot of tension,

Kind Regards
Matt

Re: Transom shift cable

When cables start to go bad, the lubrication is gone and the inner surfaces become rough and will not glide. This is mainly noticed if there is a bend or loop in the cable. If when the cable is off of the bracket it is straight and it moves easily, but as soon as you route the cable into place (with any associated bends or curves) and it becomes difficult...that is a bad cable.

Let's put it this way, sure you can move it by hand, but I can't feel how much pressure it's taking you to push and pull that cable. The shift interrup system can, and is saying it's too stiff.
